SAFARI IN THE TRUE AFRICAN WILD

An incredible, intimate, authentic experience with the most stunning wildlife on the planet in their natural habitat. You'll enjoy ultimate comfort in the bush, with all meals included, along with coffee stops and sundowners under the expert care of your skilled and knowledgeable guides. Take a moment to appreciate the little things — the scents of the bush, the sounds of birds chirping, the morning breeze on your skin, the crackling fire at night, and the brightest stars twinkling above.

Witness animals as they interact, hunt, and survive, in their most wild form, just as nature intended. Enjoy morning and evening game drives where you will have a great chance of seeing lions, elephants, giraffes, rhinos, hippos, antelope, buffalo, zebras, maybe even leopards, wild dogs, cheetahs if you are lucky… there is no telling what you’ll see on safari — Mama Africa always has surprises in store!

SAFARI OPTIONS

I’ve searched across your flexible travel dates and found some really lovely options for a 2-night safari. I’ve focused on finding the best overall safari experiences within your budget, while also including a couple of slightly more special options that I think are worth considering if you’re happy to stretch a little.

I’m still waiting on the final transfer quotes, so the numbers may shift slightly, but I wanted to get this over to you ASAP so you can have a look at the accommodation options.

Availability can change quickly, so have a look through the options below and let me know which one feels like the best fit. Once you’ve decided, I’ll get it secured for you!

Each option includes:

  • 2 nights’ accommodation for 3 adults — 2 guests sharing one room + 1 guest in a separate room

  • Morning & afternoon game drives throughout your stay

  • All meals, tea, coffee, drinking water & select beverages (depending on the lodge)

  • Conservation levies

  • Airport transfers to and from the nearest Kruger airport — Hoedspruit for Shumbalala, Thabamati, & Waterbuck; Skukuza for Umkumbe

OPTION 1: Shumbalala Game Lodge

📍 Thornybush Private Nature Reserve

My top pick if you’re happy to stretch the budget a little — Shumbalala is absolutely stunning, and a great opportunity to get that iconic “elephants by the infinity pool” safari photo! 🐘 It has that gorgeous combination of luxury, intimacy, authenticity and incredible wildlife that makes for a really special safari.

Special offer: This lodge stay also qualifies for the “Back In Time” Special, which is almost 10% off the regular rate! (Valid 07 Jan – 26 March)

The lodge sits along the seasonal Monwana River in Thornybush Private Nature Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger — excellent for Big Five viewing. The lodge’s four Superior Suites each have their own private viewing deck overlooking the riverbed, and the lodge’s pool looks out over the surrounding bush — the perfect spot to relax between game drives. Shumbalala also includes bush walks and a stocked mini-bar, so you're never waiting for a view or a drink.

Availability: 8–10 January 2027
I’ve currently reserved 2 Superior Suites for you so it doesn’t get booked up while you decide which way you’d like to go.
The lodge has availability across the wider window from 4–10 January, so there is some flexibility if different dates work better.

Your 2-night safari

  • 2 guests sharing: R47,070 per person

  • 1 guest in a single room: R69,390

  • Total for 3 guests: R163,530

OPTION 2: Umkumbe Bush Lodge

📍 Sabie Game Reserve

This is one of my favourite options for you if you want a classic South African safari experience without pushing too far into the luxury price range.

Umkumbe Bush Lodge is a lively little bush camp and, honestly, one of the best bangs for your buck in the iconic Sabi Sand ecosystem. The area is particularly renowned for leopard sightings, and Umkumbe is such a little gem surrounded by some of the big-name Sabi Sand heavy hitters — but at a much more accessible price point.

It has a relaxed, authentic safari feel, and I’ve had guests stay here who seem to hit the jackpot with their wildlife sightings every single time. I really love this one for you.

Availability: 4–7 January 2027
2 Superior Tents are currently available for your 2-night stay.

  • 2 guests sharing: R25,520 per person

  • 1 guest in a single room: R31,500

  • Total for 3 guests: R82,540

OPTION 3: Thabamati Luxury Tented Camp

📍 Timbavati Private Nature Reserve

This one is all about the design and the setting — a luxury tented camp that manages to feel both effortlessly stylish and completely immersed in its surroundings.

My favourite feature is the infinity pool overlooking the dam. You can sit there with a drink in hand while hippos grunt away and everything else wanders down to the water — your own front-row seat to the African bush!

With just four tents and a maximum of eight guests, there's a real sense of space and privacy. It's also the most genuinely all-in option of the four: the gin, the bubbly and even your laundry are included, so you won't see a bill until you leave. Add the Timbavati's excellent game viewing and this is a really special stay.

OPTION 4: Waterbuck Lodge

📍 Thornybush Nature Reserve

A great option if you want a beautiful safari lodge with easy access from Hoedspruit and a little more flexibility around your dates.

Waterbuck is set around a natural dam in Thornybush Private Nature Reserve, with lovely views from the lodge and a relaxed setup for enjoying the bush between game drives. You’ll have the chance to see the Big Five and plenty of other wildlife while enjoying the comforts of the lodge, including the swimming pool and spacious outdoor areas.

The big bonus here is the location — it’s around a 45-minute drive from Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport, making it particularly convenient for a short 2-night safari where you want to maximise your time in the bush.

A note on dates: If you'd like to stay from 7 January onwards, Waterbuck's "Back In Time" rate kicks in — around 8% off the standard package rate, which brings your 2-night safari down to R25,430 per person sharing and R36,930 for the single room (R87,790 for all three). Given the lodge has availability right across your window, this is an easy saving to capture — we'd simply anchor your dates from the 7th.
